VolunteersWood Lane Countryside Centre is home to Wood Lane Conservation Trust and offers facilities and accommodation to other voluntary groups such as Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust, North Sheffield Conservation Group, Riverlin Valley Conservation Group and Action for Stannington.

Together they deliver a wide range of environmental improvement and nature conservation projects in Sheffield working with communities and volunteers.

The aims of Wood Lane Conservation Trust are: 

 

  • To protect and create wildlife habitats and increase biodiversity
  • To help communities access the countryside by creating footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes.
  • To help create green communities and bring the countryside into the city
  • To help people of all ages understand and enjoy Sheffield’s green and historic landscape
  • To encourage people to help in this work
  • To support volunteers and provide any practical skills training needed
  • To provide facilities for environmental education for schools and individuals
  • To provide a programme of forest schools in partnership The nature box
  • To promote and demonstrate the importance of bee conservation

Wood Lane offers opportunities to get involved in practical conservation projects which really make a difference to communities. This is an opportunity to learn new practical skills and make new friends with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Conservation projects are wide ranging and include;-

  • the creation and management of ponds, wetland habitats, woodlands, hedgerows, wildflower meadows, orchards and wildlife and community gardens
  • construction of footpaths, bridges, cycle-ways and bridle-paths
  • creation of new wildlife habitats including constructing and siting bird, bat, bee and hedgehog boxes and tree and wildflower planting
  • community clean ups and litter picking
  • protection of habitats through construction of fences and stiles accessible to people with disabilities
  • environmental education and environmental arts
